Surgeon E. Bentley was placed in charge of all of the general hospitals in the District of Alexandria (which did not include Augur General Hospital) on Oct. 1, 1864, and held this position until February, 1865. From May to July, 1865, he was also Surgeon-in-Chief of the entire District of Alexandria.

Lemon, George W.

  • Lemon suffered a fracture of the femur as the result of being shot by a conoidal musket ball. He was eventually admitted to the Third Division Hospital, where he remained for over a year, clinging "to life by the slenderest thread." On 12 October 1865, Bentley finally amputated Lemon's leg. The femur bone was sent to the Army Medical Museum.
