This post hospital was organized as part of the Fort Hospitals of the Defenses of Washington by Brigadier General James S. Wadsworth. It was attached to the 1st Brigade until July, 1864, when the same forts were reorganized into the 2nd Brigage.

The brigade headquarters for the 1st/2nd Brigade was Fort Saratoga, which had a post hospital. The Indexes records suggest that this post hospital received patients from Forts Stevens and Totten in September 1863, and from both Bunker Hill and Fort Saratoga in late 1865.
